Scene-leading club DJ Kampire prides herself on connecting the dots between contemporary and old-school African club music, spotlighting female artists in sets at festivals and in clubs worldwide. Born in Kenya to Ugandan parents, she grew up in Zambia. She says: “It is important for me to continually reference Africa’s own musical history.” The compilation spans East and South African styles like Congolese rumba and soukous, right through to 1980s township bubblegum, and Zambian kalindula. Kampire highlights musicians of the 80s, including Congolese heroes Pembey Sheiro’s ‘Sala Mi Toto’ and Princesse Mansia M’bila’s ‘Ngoma Mansia’, South African V-Mash’s ‘Naughty Boy’ and Di Groovy Girls’ ‘Ririmi Rotsombela’. A must-listen for anyone looking to find out more about African club music, and especially the women behind the grooves.
