Fifty years after its original release, this long out-of-print album has been remastered and reissued on vinyl and digital form. Fania All Stars’ crack musicians were augmented by guests like Jorge Santana and Manu Dibango to show that Latin musicians could also play soul and rock. They could: so well that the crowd at New York’s Yankee Stadium, where the content of this album was being recorded, went nuts. The show had to be stopped – and much had to be re-recorded. The first (studio) side is five stars plus; the live side a little ragged. The hysteria concluding the battle of congaleros between Mongo Santamaría and Ray Barretto on the closing ‘Congo Bongo’ says it all.
