This unexpected but very welcome silver lining collection first came together as a pandemic lockdown writing experiment. US singer-songwriter Carpenter had got in touch with Fowlis and Polwart, a couple of her favourite Scottish singer-songwriters with an honourable history of collaborations complementing their stellar solo careers, simply to see what they might magic up together. As soon as they were able, they met in northern Scotland for an extended writing retreat, with a second writing session quickly following that initial success. In early 2024, this ten-song album, featuring tracks written by and featuring all three artists was recorded at Real World Studios with Josh Kaufman of Bonny Light Horseman producing. There’s nothing on this stylish and accomplished collection to startle fans of any of them but that’s no bad thing from such respected veterans, heard at the top of their game throughout this classy and confident collaboration.
