This is the second outing with the Cornwall-based, Birmingham-raised alt-folk duo Angeline Morrison and Nick Duffy. Following their debut, which focused on growing up in Birmingham, Lost Things Returning is a broader sweep through everything from funfairs to migration. Vocal harmonies and repetitive, almost childlike word cycles are a key feature of their sound. Their voices are backed by strummed acoustic guitar, fiddle, autoharp and recorder, alongside more unusual instrumentations such as lyre, cutlery and bottle tops. Name-checking influences such as the Incredible String Band and Tyrannosaurus Rex, their sound is not only reminiscent of the 60s, but that soporific, dreamy 60s sound. The meandering of the lyrics and the music, and the unchanging, plodding tempo are enough to put you to sleep. It all feels a bit stoner. It’s very much a Marmite sound: you either love the ethereal weirdness, or you don’t.
