There is an arch, stylised and arthouse feel to Turan. The Turkish singer-songwriter is a longtime member of the London music scene, and brings together a host of regular collaborators for her second studio album. The sumptuous instrumentation is driven by throbbing basslines, while clarinet, violin, kanun and oud snake around Turan’s clear, hypnotic vocals. This only scratches the surface of an ensemble of some 11 musicians who worked on the album. Her debut, 2009’s Dügüm, was entirely in Turkish, whereas here she sings in English and Turkish, rapping in English on ‘Don’t Wanna Know’. Her sound works best set to Turkish, but this mix reflects her deeply cosmopolitan vibe.
