In 2021, Good Morning Bedlam ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund their third full-length album. Fans from around world pledged $34,000 to the cause, giving birth to Lulu. Self-described as a ‘folk-pop band,’ Good Morning Bedlam are situated on the shiny happy side of the acoustic roots spectrum. Predominated by lovely three-part harmonies exulting themes of romantic entanglements and studious introspection, their music defines a benign harmonious continuum where dark, mournful murder ballads and hellbent ne’er-do-wells fear to tread.
Even a song titled ‘I Am Sad’, Lulu’s opening track, is mostly driven by a relentlessly up-tempo beat, belying its title. Cleverly sardonic lyrics and a swinging lounge lizardish arrangement distinguish ‘You Are Gonna Miss Me’ among the album’s ten (and one bonus) tracks. The core trio of Good Morning Bedlam – Isaak Elker (guitar, piano, vocals), Sophia Mae Beyer (violin, vocals) and Tori Elker (bass, vocals) – are childhood friends from Rochester, Minnesota, who have been performing together since they were teenagers. A fourth member, Dawson Redenius (trumpet, keys), joined the band while Lulu was being recorded.
