Part of a five-set anthology, presenting 71 different flamenco palos, this first volume covers 12 palos, some taking their inspiration from famous singers such as the soleá of La Serneta, on ‘Perdí Mi Centro’ and the malagueña of Antonio Chacón, on ‘Reinando’. Paco el Loco & Sangitananda’s version of the latter has all of the atmosphere of the original but ends with a jabera, Sangitananda switching to bandurria. Paco el Loco has a strong but gentle raspy flamenco voice, and the accompaniment is expressive, as they respond to each other’s nuances throughout. Sangitananda’s guitar playing is virtuosic but economical, calm and understated. Added accompaniment is provided by percussion, trumpet, palmas and female vocals; Sangitananda plays laúd and guitar on ‘Flores del Campo (Tangos Extremeños)’ and bass on ‘El Rey de los Cielos (Campanilleros)’. This is a special recording, preserving the historic material of flamenco’s past.
