Opening with the comforting sound of waves lapping on a shore, Ingrid Henderson’s new self-penned album is a beautifully atmospheric reflection on Scotland’s relationship with the sea. The album was born out of a project commissioned by NatureScot for the Year of Coast and Waters, therefore marine conservation, maritime history and folklore are subjects that feature heavily. The Glenfinnan-based harpist and pianist is also joined by some special guests; Anna Massie on guitar and fiddle, Megan Henderson on fiddle, vocals and piano and Conal McDonagh on Irish pipes and whistle. Nature features heavily here too, with field recordings of various birds and the sounds of the sea filtered throughout.
‘An Ataireachd Àrd (The Surge of the Sea)’ effortlessly transports the listener to the wild Scottish coast, while ‘An Seòladair aig Rubha Dà Chuain (The Sailor at the Point of Two Oceans)’ celebrates the increase of basking sharks visiting Scotland’s coasts. ‘The Sarcastic Duck’ is a particularly lively piece of fun. Henderson’s harp playfully flirting round the other collective instruments. Serene yet simultaneously stirring, Message in a Bottle is a thoughtful, softly delivered listen but one that leaves you with a very warm glow.
