Véronique Serret

September/2024

Originally from Mauritius, violinist-vocalist Véronique Serret is an Australian-based musician, known for her evocative compositions and performances. Bridging across film soundtracks, classical and contemporary genres, she’s been a member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, groups Coda and Ensemble Offspring, and has worked alongside such diverse acts as Gurrumul, Cinematic Orchestra, Damon Albarn and Archie Roach. Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, Migrating Bird is inspired by Australian landscapes and is dedicated to learning from the natural world. Highlighting themes of land, sky and water, Serret utilises both four- and six-string violins, along with her own unique voice, assorted percussion and birdsong, to create intriguing soundscapes of a rather experimental and improvisational nature. She is accompanied on two tracks – ‘Carbon Footprint’ and ‘Pelican Song’ – by her real-life partner, the celebrated Indigenous didgeridoo (yidaki) virtuoso William Barton on didge, guitar and voice. Captivating.
