Native American flute music has enjoyed a vast popularity ever since R Carlos Nakai first began recording in the 1980s for Arizona's long established Native music label Canyon Records. Nakai's flute suggested both a geographical and mental landscape where peace and compassion could be found. Unsurprisingly – although no one expected it at the time – his albums became bestsellers, winning an audience who found them perfect accompaniment for meditation, yoga and New Age activities. This album is frustratingly short on detail beyond describing how the musicians are members of the Ojibway tribe, which borders the US and Canada. Not one musician is named, suggesting a producer recorded a session and licenced it outright. The liner notes make mention of the tribe's history but, again, avoid any info on who made this music and when: did they do so purely as a commercial contract or does it relate to tribal culture? Those complaints aside, this is accomplished Native American flute music, quiet and atmospheric, not over-adorned, and the lead flautist has a strong tone.
