Artist/band:

Karl Seglem

Label:

Ozella Records

March/2014

Karl Seglem is important to the Norwegian music scene for many reasons: as a hugely respected tenor sax player, as producer, label owner, composer, goat-horn player and poet. He is as valued in the jazz scene as he is in traditional and world music fields, and one of the most generous of musicians in the time he gives to young musicians.

I was lucky enough to hear the quartet featured on this album play live recently. Seglem’s passion for these compositions was evident in his smile, his gentle and playful humour coming across to the audience, and his obvious warmth as a team player in the band. The other members are known collectively as the Eple Trio, yet another instance of those haunting Nordic piano trios that have emerged in recent years. Andreas Ulvo is the brilliant and sensitive pianist, Sigurd Hole the compelling, lyrical bassist, and Jonas Howden Sjovaag, playful and colourful on drums. This is quite some team, full of trust and respect for each other, and taking clear enjoyment in their music making. The CD showcases them all in music that is exquisitely beautiful, and on which Seglem has lavished the very best production.
