Renowned Salento songbird Mazzotta embarks on a daring musical journey with collaborators Ernesto Nobili (guitars) and Cristiano Della Monica (drums, percussion and electronics). With the sea echoing throughout the songs, the metaphor of the waves (Onde) is to delve into the ever-changing emotional landscapes, encapsulating love, turmoil, joy and anger. Mazzotta’s stirring and passionate vocal personality intertwine seamlessly with edgy psychedelic guitars and post-rock attitude, creating a distinctive sound evident on the opener ‘La Furtuna’, originally a traditional Salento song. A beloved highlight in her live performances, ‘Libro d’Amore’ pairs emotional poetry with a compelling guitar arrangement. The newly crafted ‘Sula Nu Puei Stare’ connects flamenco bulería with Bombino’s desert guitar. Elsewhere, ‘Damme la Manu’ features a circular guitar riff reminiscent of traditional multi-part singing, while ‘Nanna Core / Pizzica de Core (Malencunia)’ presents distorted guitars and relentless drum beats igniting a spirited pizzica dance.

Mazzotta expands her Southern musical scope – her heartfelt voice honours iconic Sicilian folk singer Rosa Balistreri (‘Terra Ca Nun Senti’) and Neapolitan composer and researcher Roberto De Simone (‘Marinaresca’). Also, she explores the Gargano region’s repertoire on the bluesy-tinged ‘Viestesana’. Volker Goetze’s trumpet enriches the intimate ‘Canto e Sogno’, whereas Mazzotta’s singing soars in the fisherman’s prayer ‘Matonna Te Lu Mare’, serving as a poignant finale for this remarkable release.
