Bobby Osborne's latest album is an engaging compendium of tunes by some of Memphis' finest songwriters, from the 86-year-old high-lonesome singer, mandolinist and founder of the Osborne Brothers. Original was produced and arranged by Compass Records co-founder Alison Brown who was inspired to take on the project while working on Peter Rowan's album The Old School. Both Osborne and Rowan represent a vital link between the era that spawned classic country and bluegrass and contemporary pioneers of progressive bluegrass. Osborne may be in the twilight of a long, distinguished career, but he still tours with his sons in Rocky Top X-Press. His singing and playing on Original, accompanied by an all-star line-up of country and bluegrass luminaries including Vince Gill, Jim Lauderdale and Del McCoury; industry veterans, such as Stuart Duncan, Todd Phillps and Sam Bush; as well as younger up-and-comers including Sierra Hull and Trey Hensley, stacks up with his finest work. Of special note is the newgrass version of the Bee Gees' hit, ‘I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You' and a sublimely lush rendition of Hank Cochran's immortal country lament, ‘Make the World Go Away’.
