This is a bittersweet triumph from one of the world’s finest fusion bands. The Afro Celts were founded by Simon Emmerson, who died last year; OVA is a tribute to that trailblazing musician, for whom this was a final project. It’s a reminder that Simon had assembled a group of excellent musicians, capable of far more than the stomping swirl of Celtic and African influences that dominates much of their live shows, and while there are some classic dance tunes included here – including ‘The Lockdown Reel’ – there are also some exquisite and thoughtful slower pieces. The album starts in a reflective mood and builds momentum, with some classic songs along the way. ‘Brid Bhan’ is a stirring, tuneful Irish melody, on which the flute and vocals of Ríoghnach Connolly are matched against sturdy electronica and kora work from N’Faly Kouyaté, ‘AM’ marks a powerful return by singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, while ‘Bâdji Kan Waly’ is a rousing blend of beats and kora. Glorious.
