Cheikh Ibra Fam might not be a familiar name for many outside of Senegal, but this multi-instrumentalist and singer has substantial pedigree. For the past 15 years he performed under the moniker Freestyle and sung as part of Orchestra Baobab. Peace in Africa is the debut album under his own name, melding contemporary Afro-pop with traditional practice.

Its lead single, ‘Yolele’, inspired by a Fula song and dance, is instantly memorable. The acoustic guitar lines, subtly auto-tuned vocals and brooding horns really combine well. The track is sung in Wolof while offering a nod to a modern impulse that is present across the record. ‘Ayitaria’ is similarly joyous and by far the standout moment. The unmistakable voice of Cheikh Lô is complemented by infectious mbira lines and luscious harmonies. ‘The Future’ also draws upon Senegalese musical royalty. Employing the talents of the Orchestra Baobab founding member Balla Sidibé, who sadly passed away last year, it acts as a metaphorical passing of the baton to the next generation. At points, Peace in Africa slips into pastiche. The faux-reggae feel of ‘Diom Gnakou Fi’ is a tad gaudy, but there’s enough zest and energy across the record to make it an enjoyable listen.
