When one hears of a duo comprised of Portuguese guitar and classical guitar, fado understandably pops into mind. But although coming from Coimbra, birthplace for one of the two fado streams, in.dia are not interested in filling that role. The instrumental path Diogo Passos and Hugo Gamboias follow is not constrained by any genre rules and keeps aiming at a loose and uncomplicated freedom. In order to expand on the instruments’ natural vocabularies in Perfeita Desordem, Passos and Gamboias resort to effects pedals (used in a sober way), go a little crazy over the electronic-riddled ‘Romance’ (with a little help from their friend Gabriel Silva), display their talent in the South American and flamenco-tinged ‘Catedral’ and even give a nod to Paredes’ legacy in ‘Danças em Lá’ and ‘Valsa Brilhante’. Still, the pair sound more affecting whenever they welcome a melancholy peak as on ‘Memórias’ or ‘Variações Sobre Memórias Perdidas’, investing more in melodic exploration than technical, reminding the listener of Portuguese ensemble Madredeus’ musical universe. Gratifying as it is that in.dia lead a quest for originality, avoiding the usual clichés that often come about when the Portuguese guitar joins her classical companion, they still need to sharpen their identity and their songwriting prowess.
