Liverpool based fingerstyle guitarist James Rigby’s playing is undoubtedly precise and technically spot on, as he demonstrates throughout 16 sunny, very deftly-picked instrumental vignettes. The mood is consistently bright and optimistic, but Rigby’s music benefits most when he eases up slightly and plays less. ‘Liverpool Sunset’ is a subtle piece that follows a tight tune, but it’s restrained; nothing is overdone. ‘The Conjuror’ is another where less notes are played and it’s the strongest here, with a beautiful melody very well executed.
However, sometimes the prowess is a touch overbearing. ‘Bravura Breakdown’ for one is perhaps a bit too pleased with itself and, having always chosen Jack Rose over Leo Kottke, I found myself wishing for a bit more attitude in places and some more shade to balance the light. That said, it cannot be denied that Picker’s Dream is a very enjoyable album that explores ragtime, blues and folk styles with impeccable playing and plenty of love for the music.
