Papayeras is the name given to Colombian brass bands, full of horns and percussion. In their native country they are closely associated with the Caribbean coast and its mix of European, African and indigenous influences; they play styles such as cumbia, porro, puya and fandango. Palenque la Papayera are a perfect example of the form, playing fast-paced tropical rhythms with saxophone leading the way. They were formed by Colombian expats living in Switzerland and in recent years have been honing their skills playing concerts across Western Europe. On this album, as they mix originals with classic covers (such as their take on Alejo Duran's ‘La Palomita’), they prove themselves to be more than adept at hitting and keeping the groove at all times (an essential trait for this type of music), as well as switching between styles. On ‘Mapale de Ramón’, featuring euphonium maestro Ramón Benitez, the joy overflows out of your hi-fi's speakers. But, as can happen with bands that are traditionally assembled for street parties and parades, the lack of variation and dynamics between songs can make for a homogenous listening experience, while also leaving you pining to hear them play live.
