Reviewing a 43-track compilation of new Brazilian music in which every band sounds completely different – each combining different influences and sounds while being brave enough to take the music down their own road – is tough. That's also a testament to the quality of the music here, proof that the new Brazilian music scene is alive, vital and unafraid to stick its neck out.

For years and years, Brazil has been crying out for the heirs to Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes – those who could take inspiration from global pop music while still creating something quintessentially Brazilian. Some have already staked their claim – there are bona fide stars on this compilation such as Siba, Tulipa and Arnaldo Antunes – but it's the surprises that hit home the hardest. Madame Rrose Sélavy's mesmeric ‘Só Um Beijo’, Trupe Chá de Boldo's nuanced pop-march ‘Na Garrafa’ and Ruspo's lo-fi carnival ‘Brasília É Luísa’ are just three tracks that fit the bill. Brazil is ready once again to take the music world by the storm; it's time we all took notice.
