This does exactly what it says on the tin – indeed it does so twice, in terms of genre. There's a shoulder-twitching portion of son dance music and the sabor or flavour is of course Cuban. Conversely, it's not a disc of surprises.
The work of a London-based band of Cubans, the album consists mainly of well-worn Cuban classics, from Chapottin's ‘Mi Son Mi Son’ to Fajardo's chachachá ‘Olga la Tamalera’, all rendered energetically and pretty expertly by what sounds like a septet including bass, keyboards, trumpet, trombone and a good vocalist – it's the sort of outfit Cuba churns out in quantities only rivalled by its export-grade medical staff. By the sounds of it, Son con Swing are a band you really need to catch live if they should happen to stray down your way.
