With 15 tracks of solid dancehall reggae, Glasgow's Mungo's Hi Fi didn’t mince their words when they named their third full-length album Serious Time. The album is awash with collaborations with reggae heavyweights and long-time friends including YT, Mr Williamz, Soom T and Cornell Campbell. Unfortunately, it feels a little bloated and repetitive as a whole. However Mungo's Hi-Fi and their legions of collaborators manage to provoke some somewhat surprising political forethought. Despite some rather jokey tongue-in-cheek lyrical moments on tracks such as ‘Bike Rider’and ‘Animal Dance’ the album lives up to its lofty title by tackling delicate political issues, from the call-to-arms that is ‘Can’t Stand It’ to the stark reminder of the horror of modern-day slavery on the intricately produced ‘Slavery’.
