Two characteristics set the music of Furnace Mountain apart: singer and bassist Aimee Curl's tremolo-laden voice and the band's reverence for the traditional bluegrass sound borne of the Appalachian region, particularly the melodies and rhythms of the Shenandoah Valley and north-western counties of Virginia. Shadow of Plenty combines original material with covers of old-time and relatively modern compositions. The 11 tracks were recorded over a span of three days at Cabin Studios in Leesburg, Virginia, in front of a small studio audience to create an ambience that more closely captures the spontaneous energy of a live concert. A striking rendition of ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ (originally penned by British folkie Ewan MacColl for American folk singer Peggy Seeger) showcases the harmony singing of the two female Furnace members, Curl and guitar/bouzouki player Morgan Morrison. The ladies also contribute an enthralling a capella interpretation of ‘I Wear the Green Willow’. ‘Fiddlin’ Dave’ Van Deventer and mandolinist Danny Knicely support the wonderfully empathetic vocalising and contribute solos distinguished by finely honed improvisatory acumen.
