Singer-songwriter Ayla Schafer plays spellbinding folk music infused with Latin mystique. Her captivating new album carries a profound message of introspection, inclusivity and connection with nature. Schafer's multilingual singing voice is warm, soothing and ripples with emotion throughout. Her intricate fingerstyle guitar combines beautifully with panpipes, percussion, trickling water, baby cries and meditative vocals.
Schafer was inspired to start her ‘medicine music’ journey six years ago after travelling in Latin America. What detracts slightly is how obvious this is. The album is redolent of Western backpackers lusting over indigenous teaching, spiritual healing and talking about a revolution. One cannot write this off as hippy idealism, though. Silent Voices is an inspiring album that exudes beauty and originality. Genuinely, there is not a whiff of filler. She is the real deal, too. She lives and breathes her art and beliefs. As capitalism continues to wreak havoc on the planet, the heartfelt message of Silent Voices might save us.
