Accordionist Markku Lepistö grew up immersed in the folk traditions of the region around Finland's Lake Kuortane and, encouraged by his father, he was playing his instrument of choice by the age of five. The strength of that heritage forms the backbone of his music – his gift for lyricism and his outstanding articulation and phrasing. Lepistö has been at the forefront of a Finnish folk music powerhouse of the past few decades, playing a key role with the legendary Värttinä, as well as bands such as Progmatics and Doina Klezmer, and many collaborations.

Solos is his fifth solo album, on which he communicates the power of being alone, of having a strong and unique voice. His technique and tone are exquisite, but what makes this album stand out is the confident beauty: the determination to explore his instrument and the possibilities of production techniques, used with characteristic subtlety. So there are some re-recordings of old tunes such as ‘Silta’ (Bridge) and newer pieces including ‘Kirkkaus’ incorporating birdsong from a Finnish lake in spring, and the contrasting forceful ‘Minima 2’, a brilliant journey into the inner life of the accordion. As ever, Markku Lepistö surprises and delights.
