Slow and Steady Music

Dt/Ig is an instrumental duo formed by Drew Taubenfeld, a multi-instrumentalist and music director who has collaborated with Dwight Yoakam, Selena Gomez, Lil Nas X and Meghan Trainor; and Isaiah Gage, a cellist and songwriter-composer-arranger whose credits include scores for TV and film (The Good Fight, Arrested Development, Dear White People), as well as playing and recording with Pharell Williams, Adele, Jennifer Lopez, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. Conjured from an alchemical blend of Americana, classical chamber, folk, rock and pop, songs such as ‘Ramborino,’ ‘Rainy Day’, ‘Poppyseeds’ and the title-track showcase Dt/Ig’s exceptional technical facility on cello, pedal steel, nylon string guitar, trumpet, clarinet, piano and drums. An unusual pairing of cello and pedal steel imbues ‘Berlin Swans’ with elegantly intense emotional power. ‘Spiders’, a densely packed dialogue between cello and guitar, zigs, zags and twists around in an intimate space. ‘Celli Prototype’, as advertised, provides Gage with an opportunity to convey the stately eloquence and somber fluidity of his instrument. Given Dt/Ig’s industry experience, it’s no coincidence that much of Some Day sounds like the main theme or underscoring of a television or film production. Happily, in this case, that’s not a bad thing.
