September/2024

Punchy Balkan brass, bubbling dub rhythms and piquant punk guitar riffs jostle joyously on this first offering from Montréal-based Dumai Dunai, a multi-cultural outfit who revel in the powerful party atmosphere they create. Creatively expressive across the piece, the record switches neatly from raucous to thoughtful and back again, as the seven-piece lead the listener on an alternately pirouetting then pogo-ing dance through a range of landscapes and soundscapes. Bandleader Eli Camilo, a veteran of the Montréal underground scene who has played with various groups, including the seminal Lemon Bucket Orkestra and the subversive Orkestar Kriminal, shares vocal duties with the Ukrainian songstress Natalia Telentso. Together the singers guide the group skilfully around the linguistic and stylistic challenges of half a dozen different languages, and about as many musical genres, to deliver a cleverly conceived and constructed fun-filled fusion project which is bound to please the crowds.
