Recorded as a tribute to Power’s late father, Songs for You is a touchingly heartfelt collection of covers. Harbach & Hammerstein’s ‘Rose Marie’ conjures ghostly dances, while Neil Young’s ‘Mellow My Mind’ adds a slightly trippy vibe. Jimmy MacCarthy’s ‘Missing You’ – perhaps best known through Christy Moore’s version – is delivered with a delicate, soft touch. Meanwhile, Eddy Arnold & Cindy Walker’s ‘You Don’t Know Me’ is stripped back to reveal its plaintive yearning. A highlight is Power’s superbly bruised, achingly ascending interpretation of Roy Orbison’s ‘In Dreams’. Power’s ethereal voice, and a minimalist approach to arrangements, prove both effective and beguiling. Her intimate interpretations bring a fresh, individual perspective to the collection. Country, folk and pop are evocatively blended into a touching reflection on nostalgia and the power of music in shaping memory. Songs for You is a moving, atmospheric and thoroughly dreamy listen.
