Sotali

Swedish folk duo Pettersson & Fredriksson originally released this set in 2010 and present it here for the first time on vinyl. Daniel Fredriksson has links to folk metal outfits Otyg and Solsaate, alumni of which feature on this album. This is a very different work, however, as exemplified by the title, Sotali, which translates to a ‘zen-like, contemplative calm.’ It’s a beautiful collection of instrumental tracks, built largely around delicately plucked strings and the distinctive sound of the moraharpa, a traditional Swedish bowed instrument which utilises keys to produce tonal changes. A high level of artistry is on display over 11 numbers which at times sound almost classically baroque in their intricacy and power. Pettersson & Fredriksson perform these complex tunes with laid-back finesse. Autumn strings of poetry and potency.
