Spanish Roots is the second album in Martin Richardson’s Return Trip project, which celebrates the myriad styles that have influenced Spanish music over the centuries.
A spellbinding journey through time and music, Spanish Roots tells the tale of musical styles that begin in medieval Spain, evolve in Central and South America, and then ‘return home’ with a new face and depth of personality. This instrumental album is a masterclass in composition and musical ability. Richardson has recruited a magnificent ensemble of musicians from around the world to feature on the album, which is raising money for Care International, a global charity working to save lives and alleviate poverty around the world. The musical tapestry of Spanish Roots celebrates flamenco, fandango, jota, sardana, salsa, merengue, bachata and tango, along with hints of Arabic, Andean and Baroque styles. As the album is a historic quest, those expecting something new will be disappointed. This is documentation for the purists. Whether Richardson will look at Latin music in the late 20th and early 21st century is unknown. Perhaps on album three? Regardless, the evolution of Spanish music told here is an aural treat. A superb album for a good cause.
