October/2016

London record label Soul Jazz Records have done an excellent job in ensuring that the vast library of recordings made at Kingston's Studio One studio (usually released on the record label of the same name) remains accessible. Here they dip into the vaults and gather up 18 dub mixes. The surprisingly slight sleeve notes – Soul Jazz usually provide the best booklets going with their reissues – mention a host of top Jamaican musicians as having contributed to the sessions these dubs are drawn from; but there's no mention of who was behind the mixing desk and when these dubs were made. Which does beg the question as to whether these are contemporary dubs commissioned from the Studio One tapes. Not that that is important – the sound here is old-school dub, relaxed and warm. It's not too dense or loud, more music to while away a lazy summer afternoon. Very nice then, but probably only essential for Studio One aficionados.
