Scots supergroup Dàimh return with an album inspired by the landscape and history of the band's Hebridean connection, and especially the native seabird the Gannet (Sula is the old Norse name for the bird).
Typically for Dàimh, fiddles, bagpipe, accordion, banjo and guitar all weave, dance and merge in a selection of the finest Scots songs and tunes. Add the vocals of Ellen MacDonald and Megan Henderson and you have a mouth-watering slice of good solid Scots folk and Gaelic tradition. ‘Chaidh Mis’ a dh’Eubhal Imprig’ is a moving Gaelic song with a tragic story at its heart. Sung sweetly by MacDonald and Henderson, with some sensitive musicianship by the band, it poignantly captures the reflective, considered and touching side of Dàimh.
‘Miss MacGregor's Traditional Jigs’ is a splendid selection of tunes, with a fine ear for tradition. There is a cracking session vibe here which is excitingly infectious. ‘PUFF PUFF’ brings the pipes to the fore in a sweaty tune, while ‘Laoidh Fhearchair Eòghainn’ closes the album with a heartbreaking lament.
With tight musicianship, gorgeous vocals and a keen ear for tradition, Sula is a stimulating and emotive listen.
