Even after 20 years of playing together, the Finnish harmonica quartet Sväng still hold a unique voice in the landscape of Finnish music. This is their tenth album and it sees them galloping towards their next decade together with typical brilliance and energy. Finnish folk has always been at the heart of their music, alongside a great love of the impossibility of Bulgarian rhythms, the plaintiveness of bluegrass and a deeply humanitarian approach to the conflicts and sadness that prevail in history. From their very start in 2004, the group’s own compositions have been inspired by the interaction of their brilliant playing: from the tiniest pocket-sized instrument to the brick-like bass harmonica, producing a sound which captivates audiences worldwide. Svängo Nuevo is a celebration of their own compositions and includes, for the first time, their new bass player and composer Tapani Varis, after the retirement of the very popular Paso Leino. From the Argentinian milonga, to Bulgarian folk dance, to a plaintive waltz, Finnish folk and a hint of American blues, a homage to nature and the song of the shepherd, Sväng not only show their thirst for discovery and making music in Svango Nuevo, but showcase, too, their ever-thrilling compositions, and their irrepressible wit.
