Kate Griffin, UK banjo player, and Matchume Zango, a multi-instrumentalist from Mozambique, met online in 2020 during a Making Tracks residency, and composed ‘Tchopo’. Two years later, they collaborated again in Mozambique to create this album celebrating the cross-cultural work. In Tchopo, both artists honour their traditions while creatively weaving their sounds together, resulting in a rich blend of world rhythms, contemporary songwriting and playful joy. The album opens with ‘Milholo’, where the banjo and timbila (xylophone) create a gentle introduction, leading into call-and-response vocals. ‘Matilweni’ evokes the imagery of birds dancing in the evening breeze, while ‘If We Listen’ offers a contemplative mood. ‘Mgueniso’ features a lively instrumental dialogue. The title-track reflects their initial collaboration, showcasing mutual respect and creative potential. ‘Open Your Eyes’ serves as a warm farewell to the album’s creation. Griffin and Zango’s collaborative spirit shines through, with Griffin’s banjo and Zango’s timbila, xitende, and mbira supported by various other instruments including whistle, guitar, drums and bass. Tchopo is a testament to their shared passion for tradition, musical storytelling and creativity.
