A deep contemporary African groove underpins this release – the first of album length from dance music experimentalists Raz & Afla. Their previous standalone and EP-length releases have already led to some pricking up of ears: this full-length drop doesn't disappoint. Sought after composer and producer Raz Olsher boasts an impressive CV, as does percussionist, vocalist, dancer and afrobeat specialist Afla Sackey – together they’re a creative powerhouse. The rhythms are infectious, intoxicating and enduring, the handmade beats and organic percussion of the album ensuring there is a real and vibrant sense of authenticity throughout.
Stylistically the music is hard to categorise beyond the loose ‘Afro-house’ designation: there are strong pop sensibilities – strong enough to make it immediately palatable to streamers, listeners and clubbers, but that's only scratching the surface. ‘Shall Prevail’ stands out as a gospel track for the ages, with real echoes of Bobby McFerrin's ‘The 23rd Psalm’ layered together with percussive groove; elsewhere we get highlife, funk, Afrobeat and four-on-the-floor electronica – all with that distinctive percussion, beautiful harmonies, and characteristically flawless production. This is sensitive, truthful multi-layered dance music of the very finest kind. It rewards close repeated listening just as much as it invites complete surrender to the rhythm.
