Within the first few bars of ‘Tilt-a-Whirl’, the opening track of The Railsplitters’ second album, you hear pitch-perfect harmony singing, the swinging precision of the string, and the distinctive, vibrato-laden contralto voice of Lauren Stovall combining to produce one of the most refreshing experiences in contemporary Americana. The instrumental line-up – Stovall (vocals, guitar), Christine King (fiddle), Peter Sharpe (mandolin), Dusty Rider (banjo) and Leslie Ziegler (bass) certainly attests to the band's traditional roots. But The Faster it Goes offers up a dozen tracks accommodating styles ranging from a breezy waltz (‘The Estuary’) and jazzy pop tunes (‘It's a Little Late’) to a foot-stomping hoedown (‘Goosetown’) and a torchy rock ballad (‘Tell Me’). ‘Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes’ is a worthy rendition of the classic bluegrass song and a tribute to the band's hero, Bill Monroe.
