Named after an area of West Lochaber where the band formed 20 years ago, The Rough Bounds is another strong release from the group, with some exciting pipes and whistles and new recruit Ellen MacDonald pitching in on vocals and Gaelic song. It's a rich mix of ballads, jigs, reels, airs and songs that highlights the band's reputation as a genuine Gaelic supergroup. To commemorate their 20th anniversary, the band have brought together a thrilling blend of traditional and self-penned tunes. Tracks such as ‘'S Trusaidh mi na Coilleagan’, ‘Tha Fadachd orm Fhin’ and ‘Chì mi’n Toman’ are played with a keen ear for tradition. ‘Donald MacLeod's Reels’, in particular, gives a taste of the frenzy the band can deliver.
It's in the self-penned tunes that the band really comes into its own, however. ‘Bodach Innse Chrò’ is a sweet puirt à beul (mouth music) piece while ‘Happy Fish’ is a playful and fun little tune. With guests such as Kathleen MacInnes and Ewen Henderson on vocals as well as Martin O’Neill (on bodhrán), Duncan Lyall (double bass) and Signy Jakobsdottir (percussion) the band have another cracking release. Dàimh prove themselves, once again, to be fine ambassadors for traditional song. Here's to the next 20 years!
