Born on the Isle of Lewis, Macmillan has a rich Gaelic pedigree. Till, his second solo album, sees Macmillan in reflective mood. Produced by Donald Shaw (Capercaillie), it's a beautiful and neatly selected collection of traditional songs and some new self-penned tracks. ‘Fonn Mo Leannain’ is a sweet little love song, while ‘Mo Nighean Donn’ is an affecting and beguilingly rhythmic waulking (cloth-working) song with some slightly funky piano from Shaw. There are even some rather nifty jigs, such as ‘Lughagan Àirde Fàillidh’. Macmillan also enlists some special guests for his album, including the unmistakably sweet voice of Julie Fowlis on the bittersweet lament ‘Fil o Ro’. The penultimate track, ‘Clann Bheag a’ Bhaile A-Muigh/ ’N Cuala Sibhs’ Mun A’ Bhall’ sees Macmillan attempt a rather nice puirt à beul (mouth music) before concluding with some small pipes.
There may be little to attract new listeners, but for those who like their traditional songs sung with passion and feeling you can't go far wrong. Pour yourself a wee dram and enjoy one of the finest Gaelic singers on the circuit.
