TÌR: Highland Life & Lore is the debut album from the mighty singer-songwriter duo of Brian Ó hEadhra and Fiona Mackenzie. And what a treat it is too. There is a real mix of sounds here – from traditional Scottish notes to Nordic, Eastern European and even some electronica. The opener, ‘An Long Èireannach’, sees the traditional Gaelic clapping song given a sprightly interpretation and sets the scene for an intriguing and entirely enticing album.

With Mackenzie's sweet vocals and Ó hEadhra's guitar the duo are perfectly matched and provide a powerful and beguiling sound. This is superbly demonstrated in the traditional prayer ‘Beannaich a Thriath Nam Flath Fial’. It is wonderfully arranged by Ó hEadhra and features his mellow vocals.

Traditional Gaelic songs, such as ‘Cha Bhith Mi Buan’, are given a modern twist thanks to producer Mike Vass, while ‘Togamaid Bothan’ returns to more traditional sounds with some sweet accompaniment from Mackenzie to Ó hEadhra's lead vocal. ‘Cauldron’ sees some moody guitar and mandolin work from Ó hEadhra and Innes White. At times, perhaps, the innovative arrangements can run the risk of repetition but overall TÌR delivers a rich, atmospheric and timeless sound. Beautiful.
