First performing together during a packed session in Glasgow in 2013, Eddie Seaman (pipes, whistle and bouzouki) and Luc McNalty (guitar and voice) have recently started to garner some fine praise for their youthful and brisk interpretations of Scottish and North-East classics. Comprising mainly trad tracks and a few well-chosen covers, all favourites gathered through their many sessions, Tirade is an accomplished follow-up to the boys’ 2012 EP Headlights.
The opener, ‘Angry Piper's Tirade’, takes no prisoners – chock-full of fiery pipes and pounding guitar – whilst ‘Glint of Silver’ is a nice cover of a Silly Wizard classic. The boys are at home with more tender fare too: ‘Harry Brewer’ illustrates McNulty's older-than-his-years voice, in a rather sweet cover, while ‘Here's the Tender Coming’ is a sweet and timeless lament to the losses of war. The influence of Kathryn Tickell is present in ‘Byker Hill’; there is also a strong County Durham influence felt throughout Tirade, it being McNulty's home.
Delivered with some great musicianship and an interesting and considered selection of tracks, Tirade promises a great deal from an exciting new duo on the trad scene.
