Rock, electronica, Cuban rhythms, Middle Eastern music and Gregorian chant are among the passions of classically trained Spanish pianist Daniel García. The flamenco-jazz he forges from them is also somewhat eclectic as he cuts up his solo leads with crafty cadenzas and tempo changes and mixes moods by inviting the sidemen – bassist Reinier Elizarde and drummer Michael Olivera – to come forward with their own virtuosic ideas. A travesura is a prank, and there's plenty of playfulness over the 11 tracks (nine of which are García's own).
The musical dérives sometimes lead to sonic epiphanies, or else to something almost like speech – not just a walking bass, but a talking one, keen to take on the garrulous piano. Veteran Spanish flautist Jorge Pardo, who has performed with Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla, joins the trio for two songs – trad number ‘Vengo de Moler’ is the closest we get to roots on this free-rolling album, and it's not really that close at all.
