Glasgow-based singer and fiddle player Collier’s debut album Uddevalla is a strikingly global and atmospheric selection of songs and tunes hailing from Haiti, Sweden, India, Indonesia and Greece. It’s a sublime mix of tradition and electronica that makes up the Uddevalla sound. The title-track, a fiddle and percussion-led tune, was inspired by time spent in the titular Swedish town, while ‘Talariya Magariya’, a traditional Indian song, showcases Collier’s soothing and captivating vocals. The self-penned fiddle tune ‘Padangbai’, inspired by a trip to Bali, is characterised by a nicely reflective and hypnotic riff. A particular stand-out is ‘Kouman Nou Ye’, which hails from Haiti and is sung in Haitian Creole – it’s an evocative song which perfectly summarises Collier’s diverse aim with Uddevalla and her beguiling voice too. Genuinely inspiring, lushly produced, and abundant with diverse collaborations, Uddevalla is also a beautifully realised and gorgeously performed listen. One to savour.
