UDU is, as far as I know, the only collaboration between Buryat and Lithuanian musicians and it is a delight. Well-recorded, the album showcases a fine balance between the music of both traditions. Alexander Arkhincheev is from Buryatia, which is in the Russian Federation, his undertone and overtone singing has its roots in Mongolia to the south. Arkhincheev's overtone melodies are sung with precision and ease, reflecting his training at the Buryat State National Theatre of Song and Dance. The opening medley, ‘Zulayashie – Dūno Upė’, demonstrates his sweet singing voice and expert morin huur playing. The piece is enhanced by Lithuanian singer Laurita Peleniūtė, her pure high tones and harmonies colour the songs with Baltic folk sensibilities. Most of the tracks allow a Lithuanian piece to flow into a Buryat Mongolian one.

Multi-layered overtone and undertone singing with additional percussion, acoustic guitar, violin and mandolin help widen the dynamic range of this, sadly, short release. Udu is one of the Sanskrit words for water and feels as if it is this spiritual and heartfelt creative current that inspired the musicians to spend the time together to craft these beautiful pieces.
