Inspired by her love of aromatic plants, the traditions of folk and classical music, and her own chromesthesia (‘ability to “see” colours in sound’), Kate Young’s debut Umbelliferæ proves to be an entrancingly vivid and visual listening experience. ‘Mountain’ serves as a moody string and synth dance duet, while ‘The Marigold Grove’ treats us to a funky and bluesy ambience. Things turn more experimental with ‘Prelude to a Dandelion’ and ‘Dandelion’, where archival voices and frenzied strings provide an energetic listen. Closer ‘Milk and Dew’ is a beautifully meditative reflection on our impact on this fragile planet, with strings and voice blended effortlessly in a heartfelt prayer for peace, renewal and hope. Umbelliferæ also boasts an impressive guest list, featuring artists such as Su-a Lee (cello), Patsy Reid (viola) and Corrina Hewat (clarsach). Overall, this is an inspiringly accomplished debut, striking a fine balance between folk, world and classical elements – a captivating and experimentally bucolic soundscape.
