Nduduzo Makhathini, the South African pianist, composer, healer and philosopher, offers his third Blue Note Records album, uNomkhubulwane. This remarkable album, a three-movement suite paying homage to the Zulu Goddess, uNomkhubulwane, while delving into Africa’s poignant history of oppression, showcases Makhathini’s trio alongside bassist Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere and Cuban drummer, Francisco Mela. Makhathini’s musical journey, marked by his exploration of spirituality and ancestral traditions, reaches a zenith in uNomkhubulwane. Departing from conventional jazz motifs, he transcends into creative mysticism. Through three meticulously crafted movements, the pianist guides listeners on a transformative, meditative experience, offering a glimpse into the divine essence embodied by uNomkhubulwane. Each movement unfolds purposefully, addressing themes of collective memory, vitality and inner attainment, ultimately echoing Makhathini’s message of optimism, freedom and balance for humanity. uNomkhubulwane invites listeners to embrace a new mode of humanism through the sacred songs of the goddess and African spirituality. ‘Omnyama’, the opening track, sets the tone of the project – with praises and summoning launched over hypnotic rhythm in acknowledgment of the divine and ancestral entities. The movements – ‘Libations’, ‘Water Spirits’ and ‘Inner Attainment’ are distinctive, yet complement each other. ‘Izibingelelo’, the first track of ‘Inner Attainment’ means ‘Salutations’ in isiZulu, welcoming the listener into the project’s last chapter, reminding us of the invitation towards hope and harmony that comes with the essence of being. A work worth savouring.
