Ventre Unique, the sixth album by Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, merges folk, krautrock, post-punk and African rhythms to create a kinetic, high-energy experience that’s as exhilarating as it is relentless. The album thrives on intense crescendos, with songs constantly building toward powerful climaxes. Opener ‘Tout Cassé’ is a prime example, surging forward like a plane hurtling down the runway, propelled by dissonant, ascending synths that set a frenzied tone. ‘Dehors’ amplifies this momentum with pounding rhythms, resembling a musical stampede, while even the quieter tracks, like ‘Tout Haut’, are underpinned by marching-band-like percussion, in constant motion. A standout – and a rare moment of calm – is ‘Coagule’, the track from which Ventre Unique (Single Womb) draws its name. Flowing with a warm, easy groove, peppered with percussion and surprising instrumental bursts; a swift guitar strum, fleeting strings and subtle brass interludes underscore lyrics that explore the end of humanity and a return to instinct, delivered in a surprisingly light tone. Altogether, the album is an invigorating journey, though its intensity may at times feel overwhelming.
