Fans of groove-laden psyche will love this offering from these boundary-defying purveyors of vintage-style Anatolian soul. The silky vocals of Derya Yıldırım flow over the atmospheric tunes like oil on water, while the music itself brings together catchy tunefulness with a cinematic sense of space. It is minimalist in places, not just in the sense of the haunting a capella intro to ‘Misket’, but in the way that musical phrases are consistently repeated and built into layers, washing over the listener in a series of sonic waves. In the next moment, though, we might be treated to fuzzy guitars, squawking synths or a funky, driving Hammond. The fact that the lyrics remain somewhat obscure to those without good Turkish doesn’t obscure the passion and emotion they contain, for while Yıldırım’s voice always sounds perfectly controlled, there’s an underlying energy and intensity that can never be held back.
