Jacob Gurevitsch is a flamenco guitarist from Denmark. His third album, Yellow Spaceship, sails through a seductive soundscape of flamenco, bolero and jazz. With flourishes of Italian and French soundtrack motifs, the album’s ten tracks conjure Parisian streets, Florentine piazzas, Spanish sunsets and romantic candlelit evenings. In 2014, the title-track from Gurevitsch’s first album, Lovers in Paris, was remixed without permission and became a sensation in Ibiza. This started a long association between his music and the vibe of the island.
A desire for collaboration characterises Yellow Spaceship. After a silky-smooth introduction, Spanish singer Buika delivers gravelly, heart-aching vocals over guitar as deep and crisp as mountain lakes. With notes of strings and accordion, ‘Melancolía’ makes hairs stand on end. ‘La Ville’, another fine collaboration with Danish chanteuse Alice Carreri, captures the sound of Paris. The smooth jazz trumpet on ‘Song for Sol’ is a sumptuous variation. ‘Breathe’, featuring Mark Linn, is a dreamy lament to loneliness. Throughout, Gurevitsch’s solid and stylish playing is the glue that binds everything together. Yellow Spaceship feels a little safe at times and Gurevitsch could certainly throw caution to the wind more often. But overall, an excellent piece of work.
