You, Golden was apparently recorded live, in a barn and in a smattering of days, but it couldn't sound further from the truth, for this is a meditative, well considered, clean record, where melodies are allowed to circle before landing, and mood can shift on a horse hair. The simplicity of traditional tunes is revered and offered homage in original compositions with the same pause and ease (‘Ditty I’, ‘Ditty II’, Ditty III’), while the drive and splendour of LAU can be heard in ‘Calendar’.
Much will no doubt be made of this duo's tender age, but this is a record – and musicianship – that indicates a life given over to music, to consumption of a wide variety of genres and styles. ‘Lullabies’, the final track on You, Golden, demonstrates the duo's approach to a tee: comprised of original tunes interspersed with a traditional tune and culminating in a traditional song, each is given an equal sonic weighting so that the listener is unaware of finite transitions and boundaries, and is instead offered atmosphere, ambience, and the perfect way to close an accomplished, innovative album.
