April 2019 (#146)
The April 2019 (#146) issue of Songlines – a special International Womens' Day edition including our 2019-2020 International World Music Festival Guide – is now on sale.
Our cover star is the Haitian-American musician Leyla McCalla who talks about the influences behind her latest album, Capitalist Blues. We examine the gender imbalance within the music business and speak to several leading women working in this still very male-dominated industry. There are interviews with Colombian singer Nidia Gongóra and her band Canalón de Timbiquí; Portuguese fado star Gisela João and London-based string duo Fran & Flora, plus the latest CD, book, world cinema and live reviews.
The digital edition, for the first time, includes a free digital download of the covermount CD, including Blick Bassy, Fran & Flora and Carminho, as well as a guest playlist from the poet and novelist, Jackie Kay, featuring music by Fela Kuti, Eddi Reader, Karine Polwart and others.
